AIE World Conferences

The Alliance for International Education was established in 2001 and has since organised
5 biennial World Conferences:

Düsseldorf 2004 - Education for International Mindedness
Shanghai 2006 - A Bridge to Intercultural Understanding
Istanbul 2008 - International Learning: Learning to be International
Melbourne 2010 - A World of Views

The AIE Regional Chapters

Between the World Conferences, AIE promotes on-going initiatives through its website and through activities organised by regional chapters and institutional partners.. At the present time there are active AIE chapters operating from London (UK), Shanghai (China), and Istanbul (Turkey). The Alliance for International Education brings together all those who are committed to advancing international and intercultural understanding through education. It promotes collaborative ventures that enhance the learning of relevant concepts, skills and values.

The Doha 2012 AIE World Conference

The theme of the AIE's sixth World Conference reflects its focus on the future of education and of international education in particular. Continuing the approach we have introduced at previous AIE events, the conference will bring together educators involved in the promotion of international education in a wide range of contexts to share insights and explore authentic learning experiences. In a phase of global economic crisis, the conference will also demonstrate why it is more important than ever to look beyond the current situation by stressing the human values and social benefits that accompany the encouragement of world views that are internationally open and interculturally responsible and which are a crucial part of the future.

Venue

Doha is a vibrant city in a dynamic region where the internationalisation of learning is already a key educational topic. Our 2012 conference is an opportunity for educators from all over the world to join with regional and local colleagues to discuss the essential features of international learning and to explore how it can be contextualised to local circumstances. The conference will be hosted by the International School of London in Qatar which embraces and practices the vision of international mindedness and of intercultural understanding which are pivotal to the philosophy of the AIE.

Our Local Partners

All AIE World Conferences are organised in collaboration with key partners who assist with on-site logistical organisation and who contribute actively in planning to ensure the involvement of local and regionally based colleagues alongside internationally based educators. AIE sets out to bring together “all those who are committed to advancing international and intercultural understanding” and we seek a representation and balance across both national and international schools. The AIE World Conference in Doha is being facilitated by the drive and vision of our partners in Qatar. For international participants ISL Qatar has also put together suggestions for combining their visit to Doha with an opportunity to share in the natural, cultural and education experiences of Qatar.

Programme

AIE conferences are built around a number of themes which explore diverse aspects of the overall title. We encourage participants to remain in the same strand so as to contribute fully to discussions that follow each of the papers presented over the three days. About half the strand time is given over to debate and discussion, stimulated by presentations which challenge us to examine the theme from a range of perspectives. Plenary sessions each day bring all participants together with keynote speakers or to share considerations from each of the strand groups.

Our strands at the Doha-2012 conference will focus on the following themes:

• Pedagogy: How can different teaching styles and techniques enhance intercultural understanding? How can professional development provide support?
• Curriculum: How can intercultural understanding be promoted through national and international curriculum innovation?
• Technology: How can we use technology to support intercultural understanding? (eg through the curriculum, through service projects, through international connections)
• Local and global citizenship: How can we promote intercultural understanding through local and global citizenship programmes? (including understanding of sustainability, and social issues)
• Regional and global developments: What regional and global developments are positively impacting the promotion of intercultural understanding through education?
• Quality Assurance: How can we ensure quality in systems for promoting intercultural understanding? (including accreditation, inspection, authorisation, evaluation of school-based work)
• Language: How do political, societal and organisational language policies and approaches support intercultural understanding?
• Assessing/evaluating intercultural competence: How can intercultural understanding be assessed/evaluated with validity?
• Community building: How can partnerships be developed in such a way as to promote intercultural understanding?
